Taarak Mehta was an Indian newspaper columnist; humorist, novelist and dramatist .He was renowned for the column Duniya Ne Undha Chasma in the Gujarati language. Popular Gujarati writer Tarak Mehta has received ‘Ramanbhai Nilkanth Award’ last week by Gujarat Sahitya Akademi and Government of Gujarat. He had received the Padma Shri in 2015.

In the year 2011 he was also honored by ‘Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar’ The Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar also known as Sahitya Gaurav Award, is a bookish admiration in Gujarat, India.He had translated and tailored several comedies into Gujarati, and had been recognized figure in the Gujarati theatre and was best known for the column Duniya Ne Undha Chasma in the Gujarati language. The humorous weekly column first appeared in Chitralekha in March 1971 and ever since has been looking at contemporary issues from a different perspective. He has published 80 books, over the years; three books are based on the columns he wrote in Gujarati newspaper, Divya Bhaskar while rest was compiled from the stories in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.

In 2008 SAB TV, a popular entertainment channel in India started a show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah that is based on his column and soon it has become the flagship show of the channel TAARAK MEHTA

He lives in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where he moved in year 2000, with second wife, Indu of over 30 years, His first wife, Ila who later married Manohar Doshi, (died 2006), also stayed in the same apartment building. He has daughter from his first marriage, Ishani, who stays in US, and has two children, Kushaan and Shailee.
