Mysterious locals from Kolhapur put fire to the set of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s forthcoming period drama Padmavati .

The incident took place at around 2 am at the Masai Pathar near Kolhapur, where the movie was being shot. Police reached the spot early in the morning on March 15 with fire engines and the fire was got under controlled. There seems to be no relief for filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

His forthcoming film Padmavati has been under the scanner ever since the director publicizes the ambitious project. And after the Jaipur attack, Bhansali reallocated base to Kolhapur in Maharashtra to restart the shooting of the film. According to reports, 40-50 unidentified men tried to smash up the sets and set it on fire. The men, armed with lathes and stones, stormed into the sets and started demolish the property.

A case with the police on Wednesday morning is filed, and some have been arrested in the case.

It was hardly three weeks ago that Bhansali decided to shift base to the Masai plateau, some 20km away from Kolhapur. Fascinatingly, the filmmaker grouse up the security after the Jaipur incident where he was manhandled by members of the Karni Sena and accused of deformation of history in Padmavati.

The reason for the attack was that Bhansali was purportedly showing a romantic sequence between 14th century emperor Alauddin Khilji (played by Ranveer Singh) and Rani Padmini (played by Deepika Padukone), an incident which the Karni Sena claims had never happened in history and thus, filming the same would be a rudeness to the Rajputana pride.

Interestingly, the filmmakers had never intended to have such a scene in the first place. Moreover, Rani Padmini is a character that was first written off in a classic poem named Padmavat by 16th century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Padmini’s way of life is a matter of debate among historians.

Meanwhile, it is reported Bhansali is safe, but the shooting of the film has been delayed till further notice. Apart from Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, Padmavati also has star Shahid Kapoor in a lead role.
