Don’t you always grab a cotton swab and put it in your ears even once in a day? We always think that the safe way to clean our ears and we should clean it in daily bases. But the new study says something else and according to it, cotton-tip applicators send a proximate 34 kids to the ER every day.
The researcher suggested, the use of cotton-tip applicators is most likely the reason of accidental penetrating ear injury in children. They maybe use full in so many ways but they are harmful too for your ear even doctor aren’t in the favor of using the cotton-tip applicators for ear-cleaning purpose, and it’s because of the fear that the user can push wax deeper into the canal ( it might cause the impaction) and increase the risk of injury to the eardrum.
For the study, Dr. Jatana and his colleagues had been collecting the reports of between 1990 and 2010 related to cotton swab-related ear injuries at hospitals from all over the country. And in those 21 years, around 263,000 under the age of 18 were treated in emergency departments, because of the ear injuries such as like ear blockage, pain, and bleeding, and they were over than 1,000 in a month or around 34 in a day. And the reason for most of these injuries (approx 77%) was children use cotton-tip applicators by themselves. The rate of parental and siblings ear injury were accounted for 16% and 6%, respectively. Overall 73% injuries happened during the ear cleaning; the other reasons were children’s playing with the swabs and fall when a swab in the ear.
So be careful when you use the cotton-tip swab and don’t let children’s to play with them, using the cotton-tip applicators carelessly may cause a big fuss in the future. And it’s better to not use it daily bases.
