Though it is not large enough or robust enough to destroy a planet, scientists have developed AN amplified optical maser paying homage to the Death Star from ‘Star Wars,’ per a brand new study.LASER

The artistic movement super weapon combines multiple optical maser beams into one harmful blast, the researchers aforementioned. The thought of merging optical maser beams isn’t new, nor has it been restricted to phantasm already. A decade’s previous Russian missile defense project looked to use the liquid as a beam combiner; however, that project was abandoned when it had been deemed not sensible. An analogous project within the U.S. investigated optical laser fusion, however exploitation totally different materials. Now, a team of Australian scientists has combined the principles of those 2 analyses comes and applied them to a brand new material: diamond.

An ultrapure diamond crystal is that the key to a brand new proof-of-concept amplified optical maser. By putting a diamond at the purpose of convergence of the various optical maser beams, the facility of every individual beam is transferred into one potent ray, the researchers aforementioned. This power transfer happens to owe to Raman scattering, once particles area unit distributed and excited to higher energy levels, which is especially strong in diamond, according to the scientists.

Diamonds also have high thermal properties that allow them to harness the laser beams energies without overheating, a concern with other materials that could be used to combine the laser beams.

According to the study co-author Rich Mildren, an associate professor of physics at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia- The fundamental problem is that the laser materials struggle to dissipate the very large waste heat load. There are technologies on the verge of having enough power, but heat build-up causes the beam to flare and power to drop leading to a lack of power on target.

Researching amplified-laser concepts have become increasingly important as new security threats have arisen, Mildren aforementioned. From low-cost drones to the missile technology, militaries from all over the world are looking for the high-power lasers as a possible defense solution.

Mildren reported the Initial tests of the diamond laser have shown success in short time, and the researchers said they are continuing to test the laser for longer periods at the higher powers. When fully operational, the amplified laser could disable drones, missiles, and other small objects.

Such high-voltage lasers are doubtless helpful in the management of area junk, propulsion of little area vehicles and beaming power to remote locations, Mildren said.

The proof-of-concept optical maser was represented during a study printed on-line March thirty within the journal optical maser and Photonics Reviews.
